Nailed it.

If anyone still doubts it just look at Mark Hamill himself. He was The Last Jedi’s first critic, going on record about how Rian Johnson didn’t seem to understand his character at all, and at how uncomfortable he felt playing Luke that way.

Then when the fan backlash began and Lucasfilm started their orchestrated campaign of labelling any and all dissenters as racist and sexist, Hamill did a 180 degree spin and praised the film at every opportunity. Luke Skywalker doesn’t want to get called a racist bigot by the company he helped build after-all.

The final reverse came when the hubbub died down and Hamill again felt free to speak his mind, when he returned to his original position and more-or-less disowned Luke in the film.

If Lucasfilm could get Hamill they could get anyone. Still doesn’t make The Last Jedi good though.
