My thoughts exactly. My only conclusion when I hear people say “it’s original” or “bold new direction” is that they either haven’t seen Empire Strikes Back, or they don’t remember it.

To add to your list, we also visit a futuristic city with a dark secret, where we meet a shady and duplicitous character.

We have a throne room sequence that looks like a fanfiction retelling of the end of Return of the Jedi, where the Jedi and Sith characters try to persuade each other to turn to their dark/light side in the lift on the way up. The Jedi character is even wearing the same bloody handcuffs. What then happens to the Jedi’s lightsaber in that scene? Does Snoke throw it out an airlock? Does he snap it in two? Does he secretly deactivate it? No, the Emperor places it next to him on his throne – on the right side to be exact. Then the Emperor taunts Luke that Kylo Ren can never be turned back to the light, before Darth Vader turns and kills Snoke.

Sorry, I’m getting the remake all confused with the original.
