I think the reason most people see the resemblances between The Force Awakens and A New Hope – but somehow think The Last Jedi is ‘new’ or ‘original’ or ‘takes risks’ – boils down to the fact that the story of Star Wars (as it was then known) is so familiar: a humble farm boy on a desert world joins a wizard on a quest to save a princess, destroys a super weapon and saves the galaxy.

Everyone knows the basic story. The Force Awakens is kinda similar. By contrast, The Empire Strikes Back is a film people claim to revere, but it’s so much more complex: narratively, structurally and emotionally. People look at The Last Jedi and don’t see The Empire Strikes Back right behind it, being traced over.

In many ways Last Jedi is more like Empire than Force Awakens is like Star Wars, and everybody missed it.
