I hear this argument presented time and time again as a justification for the trashing of Luke’s character. It’s an entirely false premise.
This would be a fair dilemma to explore if Luke had a time machine and travelled back to visit child Anakin (actually, that would’ve been a far more interesting and original Episode 8 than the Empire rehash we got, but that’s another matter). In such a scenario Luke knows what crimes Anakin went on to commit, just as we know about adult Hitler’s atrocities. That’s a like-for-like comparison.
However, in The Last Jedi Luke is shown to be contemplating murdering his own nephew in his sleep for things he hasn’t done yet.
“Aha! But Luke had a vision of the future!” the apologists cry. These Johnsonites seemingly understand as little of Star Wars or the Force as Rian, since Yoda stated categorically that the future is both “always in motion” and “impossible to see”.
The real conclusion to draw from The Last Jedi (or the Transformers franchise) is that some people just like terrible films if the special effects are glossy enough that they can turn their brains off.
